Google's affordable standalone streaming device is now available for $99 in Australia.
The new Chromecast with Google TV is available today
Apple tends to dominate the headlines in the weeks between the reveal of a new iPhone and its eventual release but in the eye of the storm , you'd be forgiven if you missed the news about Google's new Chromecast with Google TV. The new standalone streaming device is one member of Google's new family of smart devices, but it's the one we're most looking forward to. Joining the already immensely popular suite of Chromecast streaming solutions, the Chromecast with Google TV is a $99 HDMI dongle that doesn't require a smartphone or tablet to cast from (though you can still do that too).
It's a standalone streaming device with its own user interface and a cute little remote to boot. Whereas traditional Chromecast devices would allow you to stream apps like Netflix, Disney Plus, and Stan to your dumb TV (e.g. not a Smart TV), the Chromecast with Google TV eliminates the need for an extra device with in-built apps and a store to download more from. It uses the same Android TV operating system as a lot of smart TVs.
Like the Chromecasts before it, Chromecast with Google TV a simple plug-and-play device that only needs an HDMI port and a power source to work its magic. Unlike previous releases, it also comes with a voice-controlled remote, with quick access buttons for YouTube and Netflix. It's capable in streaming in 4K (if your TV supports it) and also supports Dolby Vision, HDR10, and HDR10+.
Chromecast with Google TV is available in three colours: Snow (white), Sunrise (pinky-orange), and Sky (light blue).
At launch, Chromecast with Google TV is $99 from every participating retailer; Harvey Norman, JB HI-FI, The Good Guys, and Domayne (as well as Google's online store). We'll update this guide when more deals are available but in the meantime, here's where you can pick it up.
