Disney's password sharing crackdown in short
After announcing plans to crack down on password sharing way back in February 2024, Disney CEO Robert Iger announced the crackdown would take shape in September. This was communicated via an earnings call back in August, and sure enough, in late September Australian users were notified about the changes coming. Now, as many Aussies return to the service to stream Inside Out 2 or Shogun, those with a free ride may need to start paying their way.
How much will account sharing cost additional users?
Here in Australia, Disney Plus is charging $7.99 per month for additional account users, no matter what plan you're on. That's exactly what Netflix is charging for additional member slots. In fact, Disney's approach is more or less the same. Additional users pay $7.99 per month in order to access the same plan features as the original subscriber. The only limitation is, the additional users are limited to one simultaneous stream.
Disney Plus currently offers two plans in Australia: Disney Plus Standard, which includes High Definition (1080p) streaming for two users at $13.99 per month and Disney Plus Premium, which includes 4K Ultra High Definition streaming for four users at $17.99 per month.
The additional $7.99 per month will be billed to the primary account holder, rather than the offending sponge.
Said sponge will also be restricted to using their additional account in Australia. If the primary user wants to use their account overseas, Disney will fire off an authentication code to the primary users' email address.
