In the leadup to the Pixel 9 Pro 'Made By Google' event, more hardware has been leaked and this time, it's not a smartphone. The device, reportedly named the "Google TV Streamer," might be joining—or replacing— the classic and beloved Google Chromecast dongle.
Leaks show Google’s upcoming streaming device (and it’s not a Chromecast)
Images published by 9to5Google depict a set-top box in the vein of your average Apple TV (or Hubbl) box except much slimmer.
The all-white pill-shaped device also appears longer than the average streaming box form factor and sports a distinct wedge-like shape. That's all very important. The slanted design is somewhat reminiscent of the Pixel Tablet's speaker dock which acts as both a charger for the Pixel Tablet and a Google Home/Nest speaker. In essence, placing the Pixel Tablet down on the speaker dock transforms the Pixel Tablet into a Google Nest Hub Max (or the Google Home Nest Hub Max Premium Plus Ultimate, I can't quite remember.) The working theory is that the Google TV Streamer, whatever it is, will work in a similar way for your television. Say you start watching a YouTube video on your tablet, placing it on this hypothetical Google TV Streamer device would instantly transfer your stream to your connected television. Or maybe you'd like to peruse your TV and movie options while your partner is watching the Olympics, once you've decided on something and Australia has no doubt taken yet another gold medal, you would simply place the Pixel Tablet on the dock to start streaming your TV show or movie.
That's the dream, at least. 9t05Google also points out some other changes to the Google TV remote. Most noticeably, the remote in the images seems larger to accommodate more buttons on the face; including two volume buttons instead of a side-mounted rocker, and a "magic" button which will no doubt be tied to Google Gemini, Google's AI mascot.
Realistically, we'll only know what Google's "TV Streamer" is when it's announced. But with the Made By Google event taking place on the 14th of August 2024, it's not a stretch to imagine we'll have all the details very soon.
