What is Love Actually actually about?
Love Actually is a sort of ensemble rom-com and perhaps the progenitor of that 'Every Famous Person You Know' movie poster design as seen in the marketing for inferior entries to the subgenre New Year's Eve and Valentine's Day. Just like those movies, Love Actually has multiple concurrently running storylines, each told in snippets throughout the movie's runtime. It's not quite an anthology of short stories, but rather ten love love stories that occasionally intertwine.
Of those ten stories, there are a few that get more screentime than others: Hugh Grant's severely single Prime Minister, Alan Rickman and Emma Thompson's tale of infidelity, Kiera Knightley's unrequited love triangle with Chiwetel Ejiofor and Andrew Lincoln and Liam Neeson's lovelorn widower all make up the bulk of the movie's most poignant love stories. Then there's a forgettable couple of lads looking to get their rocks off and Mr Bean's Rowan Atkinson, who is more of a gag character.
Part of its staying power is its killer cast and achingly early 2000s soundtrack, but really the mass appeal is mostly thanks to Richard Curtis' skilled screenwriting chops. Fans of Two Weddings and a Funeral and Notting Hill will no doubt already have watched Love Actually a thousand times over.
