Slow Horses, Gary OldmanApple's hit spy thriller leaves little to the imagination. Based on the Slough House series of books from Mick Herron, Apple TV's Slow Horses follows the antics of a ragtag group of disgraced MI5 agents who have been demoted and assigned to Slough House. The series stars Gary Oldman as the cantankerous Slough House supervisor Jackson Lamb.

In the words of Managing Editor Adam Smith, Slow Horses is a "genuinely excellent spy thriller that's like John Le Carre-level spycraft run through a Succession insult generator."

As an Apple original, all four seasons are streaming exclusively on the company's very own streaming service, Apple TV Plus.

Slow Horses Season 4: Spook Street began filming soon after the filming of Season 3: Real Tigers wrapped in March 2023. That might explain why it came a lot quicker than expected.

The fourth season of Slow Horses premiered on the 4th of September 2024 and for the first time since it started, debuted with one episode instead of two. The remaining five episodes of the six-episode season were released on a weekly basis until the cracking finale aired on the 9th of October. The thrilling fourth season is now available to stream in its entirety.

When will Slow Horses Season 5 release?

Great question. When seasons three and four of Slow Horses were filmed back to back, we never could have imagined that the fourth season would release as early as it did— in September, far earlier than seasons 2 and 3 which released in December and November, respectively.

But now we hear reports that season 5 of Slow Horses hasn't just finished filming, but that production has wrapped entirely, meaning it's just a matter of time before it's released to Apple TV Plus.

Apple is still riding off the high of Season 4's incredible critical reception, so it's likely the fifth season will remain in the can for a few more months. But it's fair to say that fans won't have to wait as long for the fifth instalment of Slow Horses.

What is Slow Horses all about?

As mentioned above, Slow Horses is based on the Slough House spy series of novels by Mick Herron. Each season so far has followed the beats of each book in the series (Slow Horses, Dead Lions, Real Tigers.) It follows a band of British intelligence agents who have all found themselves in MI5's naughty corner, Slough House, for various career-defining blunders.

Slough House acts as a way to keep the agency's rejects away from the action without outright firing them. The sheer drudgery of Slough House is only made worse by the head of the department, Gary Oldman's cynical Jackson Lamb, who hopes his team of rejects will quit altogether.

That is until the team of MI5 outcasts is embroiled in a much bigger conspiracy, presenting each agent with an opportunity to claw their way out of Slough House and back to the big leagues.

How does Apple TV Plus compare?

Apple TV Plus is kind of unique as a streaming service. It doesn't have thousands upon thousands of TV shows and movies like Amazon Prime Video, and it doesn't offer tiered plans like Netflix or Stan. Its focus is very on quality over quantity and that seems to be paying off in a big way. Some of the biggest and best TV shows of recent memory are Apple TV Plus originals, including but not limited to, Severance, For All Mankind, Ted Lasso, Silo, Masters of the Air and Mythic Quest.
