It's been a long road to PSVR 2 (PlayStation VR2) but this February, Sony's next-gen headset finally hits store shelves. It will cost you more than the PlayStation 5 itself but those looking to secure a headset can do so through a number of Australian retailers.

Pre-orders for the PSVR 2 are available through Amazon with no deposit required.

Otherwise, EB Games will accept a $100 deposit while Sony, Big W and JB HI-FI all require the full payment upfront when you place a pre-order.

Below is a list of pre-orders and pricing for the PlayStation VR2, Horizon: Call of the Mountain Bundle, and the PlayStation VR Sense Controller Charging Station.

All of the listed PlayStation VR2 products above will ship from the 23rd of February 2023.

Over a year and a half since Sony first teased its next-generation PlayStation VR headset, we finally have a price and official release date for Australia. The PlayStation VR2 (PSVR 2) will release on the 22nd of February in Australia for $879.95 RRP. Pre-orders are available now.

In addition to the headset itself, punters can also pre-order Horizon Call of the Mountain bundle (which comes with the PSVR 2 and a copy of Horizon Call of the Mountain) and a charging station for the PSVR 2 Sense controllers for $79.95.

Since the PS VR 2 was first announced, a hefty selection of games and experiences have also been revealed.

You can “feel a new real” in February

When the PSVR 2 was first teased, Sony was smart to signal that the headset would not be released in 2022. So I tempered my expectations and came out pleasantly surprised when Sony announced that the PSVR 2 would officially release in Australia on the 22nd of February 2023.

Pre-orders of the PSVR 2 became available from Tuesday the 15th of November 2022 and are still available at the time of updating this guide (1st of February).

How much does the PSVR 2 cost in Australia (AUD)?

The PSVR 2 starts at $879.95 (AUD) RRP in Australia.

The PSVR 2 will start at $879.95 RRP in Australia but you can save a few dollars here and there through various pre-order offers.

You can bundle a game with the Horizon Call of the Mountain bundle, priced at $959.95 RRP, and even pre-order a charging station for the PSVR 2 Sense Contollers for $79.95

That’s more than a PlayStation 5 and about 60% more than the first PSVR (40% when adjusted for inflation.) It’s a lot of money.

Personally, I got enough use out of the first PSVR that I felt the $549.95 price tag was warranted. But even so, the $800+ cost is making me question my loyalty to the device that helped me keep fit during quarantine.

What games will be available for PSVR 2?

There should be a decent selection at launch.

In addition to the games previously announced for PSVR 2 (Horizon: Call of the Mountain, Resident Evil Village, Resident Evil 4, No Man’s Sky etc.,) Sony has revealed a decent selection of new PSVR 2 games and experiences for the launch window.

RoadToVR has an exhaustive list here but for a taste of what's to come, check out the PSVR 2 trailers below.

Yes. Unlike other standalone VR headsets, like the Meta Quest 2, the PSVR 2 requires a PlayStation 5 to run, making the total investment quite pricey.

Absolutely. And if you're just reading this for the first time, probably much sooner than you think. The PSVR 2 releases in Australia on the 22nd of February 2023.

Pricing differs between retailers ever so slightly, but you can expect to pay around $879 AUD for the PSVR 2 headset at launch.

That remains to be seen. The benefit of the Meta Quest 2 is that it's a completely standalone device, meaning you don't need a super-powerful PC to use it. The PSVR 2, on the other hand, requires an additional investment in the PS5.

The experience itself (and the library of games) will ultimately determine whether the PSVR 2 is better than the Meta Quest 2 or not.
