Compared to other providers that are household names in Australia, AGL is a relatively new face in the internet space. Look to AGL if you’re after an NBN plan, particularly if you’re already an AGL energy customer who may be able to get a bundled discount. Here’s everything you need to know about AGL as an internet provider.

AGL internet fast facts

  • AGL is a publicly listed and Australian-owned company that’s been around for close to 200 years as an energy company and has offered internet services since 2020.
  • All AGL plans are unlimited-data NBN plans, which cover all major speed tiers.
  • If you’re an AGL energy customer, you can bundle your AGL internet plan to save money.
  • AGL lets its customers change their NBN plan type once a month without cost.

What are the different types of AGL internet plans?

AGL is an internet provider for those in fixed-line NBN areas, namely people who live in metropolitan parts of Australia. Every major NBN speed tier outside of the entry-level NBN 12 is offered by AGL.

AGL NBN plans and prices

AGL plans are available to anyone who lives in a home connected to the NBN via Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP), Hybrid Fibre Coaxial (HFC), Fibre-to-the-Curb (FTTC), Fibre-to-the-Building (FTTB) or Fibre-to-the-Node (FTTN) technologies. All of those eligible homes can sign up for AGL’s NBN 25/5, NBN 50/20 or NBN 100/20 plans. Only those with FTTP or HFC technologies can sign up for AGL’s NBN 250/25 and NBN 1000/50 plans.

What do you get with AGL plans?

All AGL NBN plans come with unlimited data and identical inclusions. The more you pay, the faster your NBN download and upload speeds. Here’s what you can expect from AGL’s NBN plans in terms of typical evening download speeds:

  • AGL NBN 25/5: 25Mbps download, 4Mbps upload
  • AGL NBN 50/20: 50Mbps download, 17Mbps upload

  • AGL NBN 1000/50: 650Mbps download, 43Mbps upload

AGL internet plan features

Like most other NBN providers we track in our database, AGL offers no-contract NBN plans with $0 upfront fees. If you’re an AGL energy customer, you may be eligible for a discount by bundling your energy bill with your AGL internet bill. You can also add a home phone plan for $10 a month, which includes unlimited calls to Australian numbers. AGL is light on other features outside of being a certified carbon-neutral internet provider.

AGL internet plan modems

AGL lets customers save money by bringing an NBN-compatible router or modem-router to use with its plans for a $0 cost. Alternatively, you can pay off or purchase an Amazon Eero 6 Plus router, or a TP-Link VX230v modem-router. The VX230v is compatible with all NBN technologies and is a dual-band WiFi 6 device with 1800Mbps max wireless speeds. It also supports VoIP calls and has a single USB 2.0 port, plus three gigabit Ethernet ports.

Note that AGL doesn’t offer either Eero router to FTTB or FTTN customers, or anyone adding a home phone service, as these networking devices don’t support those technologies. The Eero 6 Plus is available in single, dual or triple-device configurations. In terms of features, the Eero 6 Plus is a dual-band WiFi 6 device with wireless speeds up to 3000Mbps with support for up to gigabit internet. It has two gigabit Ethernet ports, but note that at least one of those on one of the Eero devices is required to connect to your NBN modem.

How to switch to AGL internet

Switching from one NBN provider to AGL (or any other) is a straightforward process. Here’s how to switch to AGL:

  1. Use the ‘Go to site’ button next to the AGL NBN plan you like most to go directly to the AGL plans page. If there isn’t a ‘Go to site’ button, visit the AGL website.
  2. On the AGL website, enter your address then use the ‘Choose this plan’ button to lock in your selection.
  3. Select whether you’re a new or existing AGL customer, confirm any priority assistance needs, then optionally add a home phone plan and modem. For the modems, you can buy outright or pay off over 12 or 24 months.
  4. Hit the ‘Continue’ button then follow the prompts after the ‘Check out now’ button to complete sign-up.
