Aldi has a 0.9kW Portable Air Conditioner up for grabs during its November Special Buys, but that kind of power won’t exactly move the mercury.

While a lot goes into establishing what size air conditioner you need, the basic calculations show you need 125 watts per square metre. The Aldi aircon has an 890 watt cooling capacity, meaning it will only work efficiently in a space of 7.12m2. The average bedroom is around 20m2 for reference.

The numbers may be a bit better depending on where you live however. Climate plays a big part in the efficiency of cooling capacity - the more humid and warm an area is, the more watts a unit needs to combat it. According to Fair Air’s calculator, in Sydney you’ll need around 80 watts per metre squared, while Brisbane needs 96 watts, and Perth 126 watts. Some households will definitely fare better using the $229 appliance, but for others it will just be throwing money into the flames.

A better buy looks to be the Bladeless Fan available for just $89.99 during the same Special Buys. While Aldi doesn’t offer any information about airflow, it has a 35 watt motor which is about half of Kmart’s Bladeless Floor Fan. The Kmart fan can handle 741CFM, meaning the Aldi version can likely do around half that at full capacity. While this also ends up being rated to quite a small space (6.175m2), it is a cheaper, more portable buy, and will cost far less to operate over the summer.

Both are available from select Aldi stores from Wednesday November 20th, 2024.
