At its most basic level, the laws of thermodynamics tell us that heat has to transfer for cooling to occur. For air conditioners this usually means that the coolant pulls the heat out of the air and pushes it out through a duct or exhaust system. The Morphy Richards Ductless Portable Air Conditioner completely bucks these rules, not only cooling air but doing so without a hot air duct.
To accomplish this, the Ductless Portable AC uses a high-end compressor, and an eco-friendly refrigerant to manage heat. This compressor compresses the refrigerant to a high pressure which in turn absorbs the heat and carries it away. It also uses a small water tank to cool the components to minimise how much additional heat is held within the machine, all up keeping the air that does get expelled closer to room temperature.
I spent an excruciatingly long time at the Morphy Richards booth at IFA trying to find where the warmth was on the device, but to no avail. Not only was it pumping out cool air, but it was room temperature from all the other vents.
On top of that it has an impressively low power consumption of just 300 watts, which is just a fraction of what you’ll find on our best portable air conditioners page. Moreover, you can actually buy this thing. It is real, and already backed hundreds of times over its target on Kickstarter. Retailing for $549 USD (which even with the exchange rate is comparable to most high-powered air conditioners), the first lot will begin shipping in December this year.
