Cloud Nine Contouring Pro review: A dual-function powerhouse
You’ve heard of the emotional support water bottle, but what about the emotional support hair straightener? I’ve had my trusty, crusty hair straightener for over 10 years now. She saw me through my side fringe era, Ariana Grande ponytail era, even the ‘I decided to give myself a fringe at 2 am and now I’m panicking’ era.
Whenever a shiny new hair tool graces the public eye, I condition myself into thinking I’m content with my well-worn straightener. Deep down, I knew our relationship had run its course. The Contouring Pro 2-in-1 is the upgrade I never knew I needed. No longer will I need to settle for the harsh kinks and flat curls that come with a ten-year-old hair straightener. With mineral-infused plates and smart features that’ll keep your hair happy and healthy, it’s a pretty solid option for most folks in the market for an upgrade.
Cloud Nine 2-in-1 Contouring Iron Pro: Performance
I’m blown away by TikTok creators who can stick to their 20-step curl routine. Even though the payoff might be picture-perfect, bouncy curls, it’s something I know I’ll never stick to. Hair care is the foundation of a solid hair routine, but it doesn't have to mean an endless list of unattainable gels and creams. For most, it means styling with the right temperature for their hair type.
Cloud Nine knows how important styling with the right heat is. The Contouring Pro has a feature called Revive Mode that pre-sets the temperature to 150 degrees. The plates vibrate and feed through your hair instead of clamping down, to minimise friction and breakage. I found that Revive Mode works best to tidy up any flyaways and pieces that weren’t completely straight. If you have thick hair and a lot of it, it’s probably not the most efficient way to style a full head of hair.
Even though 150 degrees seemed to tame the flyaways, 175 degrees was the sweet spot for straightening. With Cloud Nine’s hair temperature calculator, I could confirm the best temperature for my hair type and go from there. When it came to curling, I found that pumping the heat up to 185 was best for max hold. In the past, I found curling with a straightener to feel clunky, so I avoided it altogether. That all changed when it came to the Contouring Pro.
The Contouring Pro makes curling a breeze, leaving you with curls that last noticeably longer than your run-of-the-mill straightener. Below is my hair after a four-hour-long lunch, just as lush as when I left the house. My knight in shining armour, Cloud Nine has revived my love for curls. One of my favourite things about the Cloud Nine is that it does just as a good job at curling as it does straightening.
I despise having hair in my eyes, so making sure my fringe is styled and set with hair spray every morning is a must. The Contouring Pro makes what would be a dragging process seamless. It’s hot in less than 40 seconds, so all I need to do is glide it through, set it, and she’s ready for the day. As a bonus, the plates are infused with sericite, a magical mineral that seals the cuticle and locks in moisture to give your hair that extra, shiny zhuzh. Talk about looking and feeling like a million bucks.
Cloud Nine 2-in-1 Contouring Iron Pro: Design
My favourite thing about the Contouring Pro is that it’s designed to be a straightener and a curler. The curved floating plates glide over your hair instead of clamping down so youre not left with ugly kinks and harsh lines. It genuinely feels comfortable to use, and not at all like you’re using a straightener to curl your hair.
Despite coming in at a lengthy 3 metres, the cord never seems to get in the way. The 360-degree pivots get you to those hard-to-reach places, while doing away with the hell that is a tangled cord. Finally, I can curl the back of my head without getting smacked in the face with that god-forsaken cord.
There’s nothing you need to do or change in switching from the straightener to the curler, except maybe the placement of your hands for maximum comfort. The only somewhat annoying thing about the design of the Contouring Pro is that the power button is awkward to reach. That being said, it’s easy enough to switch it off at the power point to avoid getting too close to the hot plates.
How much does the Cloud Nine 2-in-1 Contouring Iron Pro cost in Australia?
The Contouring Pro 2-in-1 typically retails for $499. At the time of writing, if you purchase directly from the Cloud Nine site you’ll get a sweet $80 discount. This’ll get you the tool itself, and a lux royal blue velvet case.
Is the Cloud Nine 2-in-1 Contouring Iron Pro any good?
The Contouring Pro 2-in-1 is well worth the upgrade from your current hair tool. While the high-temperature range and dual-function are sure to appeal to the masses, it’s not going to be everyone’s cup of tea. If you’re someone who loves the convenience of only having one tool or you’re in the market for an upgrade, you won’t regret the Contouring Pro. Not everyone’s hair routine is going to look the same, just as styling tools aren’t always a one-size-fits-all situation.
