Dyson’s first foray into hair styling formulas is derived from an oyster mushroom molecule chitosan. Named after the macromolecule, Dyson’s Chitosan range includes a Pre Style Cream, and a Post-Style Serum aimed to give flexible but strong all-day hold without leaving hair crunchy. This is mirrored by the molecule itself which is found in the cell walls of the fungi - it is strong but delicate, and gives the mushroom its shape.

Both styling products are designed for hold that emulates these mushroom-like characteristics. The Pre Style Cream primes, holds, and conditions using conditioning agents, silicones and oil blends catered to different hair types. Four variants are available offering either light or rich conditioning, for either straight to wavy, or curly to coily hair. Each formulation includes a combination of grape seed, castor seed, argan and coconut oil, all in different concentrations depending on the hair type. Straight to wavy hair has lower quantities of each, while the curly to coily hair formula is richer across most every oil type.

The Post-Styling Serum is meant to hold, hydrate, and define styles while protecting against humidity and repair signs of surface damage. It utilises hyaluronic acid as a weightless protective shield, and amino acids to smooth out the appearance of surface damage. In testing the Post-Style serum helps styles to hold against humidity of 80%.

These products were used on my hair prior to launch at VALONZ hair salon in Sydney. I left the salon with a super bouncy mane and headed into the moody drizzle that has been hovering over the city for the past week. Humidity varied from 73% - 100% throughout the day, and by the time I arrived for the launch event at 6:00pm my hair had dropped slightly but overall was still holding steady. Speaking to others at the event this wasn’t a universal experience however. Many people anecdotally told me that their hair had fallen, or that they had to make some tweaks between their salon session and the event. In all fairness this was a huge stress test for the new Chitosan products as the Sydney humidity was mostly beyond that 80% mark. Still, I was impressed with their performance. My hair felt silky, smooth, and not at all weighed down. It is two rainy days, and two pilates classes later and my hair is still holding shape.

In true Dyson style, both products come in truly over engineered packaging. The refillable package dispenses 0.22ml per pump which allows for more accurate product usage, and less wastage. Rather than squeezing out too much, or not enough product, the design allows users to go through some trial and error to learn exactly how many pumps are required.

The Chitosan range costs $89 for 100ml of product plus the pump packaging, and $79 for 100ml refills. These will be available directly from Dyson from August 23. You can sign up here to receive future Dyson updates.
