GHD recently released the Duet Blowdry Hair Dryer Brush with a maximum temperature of 120˚C, a full 65˚C lower than the brand’s advertised “ideal styling temperature.”
Most well known for its straighteners, the brand generally sticks to a single temperature setting of 185˚C across its stylers. GHD claims this is “the ideal styling temperature”, although these claims are dubious at best. According to studies, heat above 60˚C can damage hair, with anything above 140˚C causing structural and irreparable damage to the keratin proteins in the hair. In testing the brand compares its hair health protection to competitor stylers operating at 235˚C, which quite frankly isn’t a fair comparison by any methodology.
GHD isn’t usually transparent about the temperatures within its hair dryer range, which makes this a departure in a couple of ways. Not only does the drop to 120˚C for the blowdry brush shed some light on air-focused styling temperatures, but it also makes the styler cooler than the “zero hair damage” Dyson AirWrap.
The Duet Blowdry brush heats the round brush barrel and bristles with hot air in order to dry and style your hair simultaneously. It utilises sensors that monitor the low styling temperature 400 times per second, to minimise heat damage and breakage. Equipped with nylon bristles, the Duet should work well for most hair types. This kind of bristle smoothly glides through hair, and can effectively detangle knots while creating lift.
Available in both white and black, the GHD Duet Blowdry Brush retails for $595.
