Like all internet connected gadgets, robot vacuum cleaners get a certain amount of security updates and patches in their lifetime. When these run out, your device and the network it is connected to becomes more vulnerable. As such, we generally recommend that when these updates run dry, its time for an upgrade.

How long these updates last depends on the brand. Roborock has a minimum two-year guarantee, while Ecovacs supports for three years from the launch date. Other manufacturers aren't as transparent. iRobot only informs customers six months before updates are set to stop. Here are all the vacuums we know will lose support either this year, or in January 2025.

Of course a two to three year life span is quite short for an appliance as costly as a robot vacuum cleaner can be. If updates are gone, and upgrades are out of the question, you can still safely use your robovac albeit with stunted functionality. You could always disconnect it from your home network, and simply use the physical buttons on the machine itself. It's a little bit more hassle that saves you both money, and peace of mind.

For now the Roborock app is set for continued support until 31 December, 2026, and the Ecovacs app until at least 31 December, 2034.
