After months of teases and ample anticipation, Google is finally ready to dish the dirt on its next slate of premium smartphones and there's a lot to unpack. The cat is officially out of the bag and we've got all the juicy details about the new Google Pixel 9, Pixel 9 Pro, Pixel 9 Pro XL and Pixel 9 Fold.

We've broken Google's latest foldable out into its own guide, but if you're in the market for one of the other devices, here's the low-down on everything you need to know about every version of the Pixel 9 and Pixel 9 Pro, when you can get your hands on them and how much they will cost in Australia.

Quick look: What's new in the Pixel 9 series?

  • Tensor G4: Both devices have Google's fourth-generation flagship processor
  • Redesigned rear camera: New 'Modern Sculpted' look with more megapixels on each lens
  • New AI features: Pixel Screenshots, Pixel Studio, Gemini Live
  • Brighter screens: Actua display for the Pixel 9, Super Actua display for Pixel 9 Pro and Pixel 9 Pro XL
  • New camera features: Add Me, Improved Magic Editor, 8K Video Boost
  • More expensive:  This year's Pixel devices are pricier than last year's Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro

If you're after the short version, it's that this year's Pixel phones come in greater variety than their predecessors. Those who prefer a smaller form factor no longer have to choose between that and getting the best hardware that Google offers. There have been small gains across the board, from the camera to the performance to the design. Writ large though, the underlying pitch here isn't all that different.

The Pixel 9, Pixel 9 Pro and Pixel 9 Pro XL are all envisioned as vehicles for Google's ambitions in the AI space. If you're at all intrigued or enthusiastic about that side of the tech world, you'll probably find a lot to like here. However, all those new tricks do come at a more expensive price point.

How much will the Pixel 9 cost on a plan?

Regardless of whether you're after the Google Pixel 9 or the Pixel 9 Pro XL, those looking to avoid paying outright for Google's latest and greatest will have a handful of options when it comes to postpaid mobile plan providers.

We're still waiting for the full details but it's probably safe to say that Google's new devices will be available at launch on both 24-month and 36-month plans through several Australian carriers including Telstra, Optus and Vodafone. That was the case with the Pixel 8a earlier this year, so it's no surprise if it ends up being the same deal with the Pixel 9, Pixel 9 Pro and Pixel 9 Pro XL.

No matter whether you're buying last year's iPhone or the new Pixel 9, if you pick it up on a plan you're looking at paying the RRP of the device divided out by the number of months in your plan. Then, you just add the standard cost of your plan on top. This method doesn't account for any pre-order incentives, trade-in bonuses or deals. That said, it should give you an idea of what to expect.

With that in mind, here's a sense of what to expect from each of Australia's big three mobile providers when it comes to Google Pixel 9, Pixel 9 Pro and Pixel 9 Pro XL plans.

Vodafone Pixel 9 plans

If you want to pick up the Pixel 9, Pixel 9 Pro or Pixel 9 Pro XL for as little as you can get away with, you're probably looking to do so via Vodafone. While this provider can't match Telstra or Optus when it comes to coverage, it does come in at a much cheaper starting price.

On top of any standard postpaid plan inclusions, Vodafone customers also get the excess-charge-free data, 5G connectivity wherever they can get it plus $5 per day roaming whenever they need it.

Check out the widget below for a round-up of the provider's roster of Pixel 9 mobile plans.

Optus Pixel 9 plans

If you're after better coverage than Vodafone can vouch for but don't want to deal with the higher prices that come with Telstra, then Optus might be the next best bet when it comes to Pixel 9, Pixel 9 Pro and Pixel 9 Pro XL plans.

Assuming that this year's lineup matches that of last year's, you should be able to snag the Pixel 9, Pixel 9 Pro and Pixel 9 Pro on either 12, 24 or 36-month plans through Optus. Each eligible Optus postpaid plan will come with excess-charge-free data, a discounted rate on Optus Sport and the ability to save on your monthly subscriptions via SubHub.

Check out the widget below for a round-up of the provider's roster of Pixel 9 mobile plans.

Telstra Pixel 9 plans

Telstra's mobile plans are usually the most expensive of the big three, so it shouldn't shock you learn that it'll likely end up being the most pricey option for those looking to buy the Google Pixel 9 and Pixel 9 Pro on a postpaid plan.

Fortunately, that higher price does come with plenty of perks. The list here includes four free months of Spotify Premium and two free months of Binge.

Those who sign up for a Google Pixel 9 plan with Telstra can expect to be able to pay off their device over a 12, 24 or 36-month period with access to excess-charge free data for the lifetime of their plan. Check out the widget below for a snapshot of the cheapest Telstra Pixel 9 plans.

At a high level, the Google Pixel 9 isn't a huge departure from last year's Pixel 8. Sure, it's got a new look and a more powerful processor. However, the bells, whistles and underlying appeal are much the same.

The Pixel 9 is a premium smartphone that's designed to make the most of the Google ecosystem and put as little friction between you and Google's Gemini AI tech as possible. The device is $150 more expensive than the starting price for last year's Pixel 8, but it does come with the same seven years of security and software updates.

Compared to the standard model, the Pixel 9 Pro offers a brighter screen, a more powerful rear camera setup, a few more GB of RAM and a superior selfie camera. You also get a full seven years of security and software updates, though you are paying for it.

It's got the same guts as the Pixel 9 Pro but features a larger 6.8-inch screen. Naturally, it's also got a bigger battery. As with the rest of the range, the device comes with 7 full years of software and security updates and 12 months of Gemini Live.
