Samsung has reimagined its latest flip phone as a tribute to one of its oldest.
The new Galaxy Z Flip 5 Retro boasts the same shape and specs as its namesake but comes wrapped in a blue-and-silver colour scheme that echoes the aesthetics of the 2003 Samsung SGH-E700.
The new coat of paint here extends to the software as well as the hardware. The Galaxy Z Flip 5 Retro features a fresh UX inspired by 2000s-era pixel art plus an exclusive Flex Window animation designed to evoke nostalgia for that same slice of tech history.
Looking back 20 years later, Samsung claimed that the original SGH-E700 was most notable for its built-in antenna.
"This innovation, coupled with the phone’s widespread popularity, played a pivotal role in advancing Samsung's position in the mobile phone industry," the company said.
On the inside, the Galaxy Z Flip 5 Retro features all the same bells & whistles as the standard model does. That list includes a Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 processor, 8GB of RAM, a 3,700mAh battery and a 12MP dual-lens rear camera.
The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5 Retro will be coming to six markets, including Australia, in November at an RRP of $1949. At this stage, the device won't be available on a plan or via retail. Instead, you'll have to order one via the Samsung website.
For those looking to keep track, that represents a $300 premium on the starting price of the cheapest Galaxy Z Flip 5 out there. For a round-up of the cheapest plans for that device, check out the widget below.
