Amazon Prime Australia: the next streaming service to raise prices
The cost of Amazon Prime is going up.
Amazon has announced that the Australian price of Prime membership will rise from $6.99 per month to $9.99 per month from June onwards.
According to Amazon Australia's Head of Prime Marcos Regalo, this increase is the first step towards the addition of new membership benefits for the service.
“Prime members love the combination of shopping, savings and entertainment in one membership that Prime provides them, and we are committed to continue investing in and growing the value of Prime," he said.
Those who sign up for Prime before May 24th will get 1 month at the original rate (on top of the free trial period) before being moved onto the new one. Existing Prime members will be charged the new price from June 28th onward.
The cost of the annual Prime membership plan is also slated to rise from $59 per year to $79 per year. However, so long as you sign up for an annual plan before either of the dates above, you should be able to lock in your next year of membership at the cheaper price point rather than the more expensive one.
While Amazon is far from the only streamer to raise its prices in recent times, this move represents the first such rise for Prime since it first launched in Australia. From 2018 until now, Amazon has held the line as one of the cheapest sources of quality original series and movies. From June this year, that'll no longer be the case.
