Netflix's cheapest plan yet.
How much Netflix’s ad-supported plan will cost in Australia
Netflix has confirmed its cheaper ad-supported tier will be coming to Australia from November 4, and we now know how much it will cost. Dubbed Basic with Ads, the new option will cost $6.99 per month.
For comparison, Netflix's current entry-level plan starts at $10.99 per month, its standard tier sells for $16.99 per month, and its premium for $22.99 per month.
Basic with Ads is pretty much what it says on the tin - it's the conventional Netflix experience, but you'll get between four and five minutes of ads during each hour you watch. Ads will be between 15 seconds and 30 seconds in length, and will play before and during shows and movies.
Some shows and movies won't be available on the ad-supported tier, however, and customers also won't be able to download titles for offline viewing. The tier only supports one simultaneous stream.
Basic with Ads supports quality up to 720p, which is still high definition, but a step down from the higher resolution 1080p video available on the standard tier.
When the plan launches, Netflix will upgrade its Basic plan to 720p as well. It currently only supports standard definition video.
Netflix isn't the only streaming service looking at adding a cheaper ad-supported tier. Disney+ will be launching its ad-supported option in December, but so far has only confirmed it will be doing so in the US. Recent rumours suggest Apple is also considering an ad-supported option for Apple TV+.
