Razer Viper Ultimate review: All-hands gaming

The Razer Viper Ultimate is a pricey wireless gaming mouse that quickly proves itself worth the investment. It feels a smidge small in larger mitts, but the bundled charging dock means no cable juggling (for the slightly more expensive option) and the no-nonsense ambidextrous design gives you easy access to five core mouse buttons (and wheel scrolls) whether you’re a righty or southpaw.

If your budget allows it, you’re better off gunning for a wireless gaming mouse these days rather than a wired one. Why? They’re just as accurate as wired without the skipping that used to plague earlier models. Wireless gaming keyboards and wireless gaming headsets are also a great way to free up precious desk real estate.

On the wireless gaming mice front, while it doesn’t have a whole lot of buttons for RPG fans (unlike the versatile Logitech G502), the Razer Viper Ultimate is a great investment for any other gamer not deterred by the price.

Opt for this cheaper configuration, and you’ll get the Viper Ultimate mouse, a MicroUSB to USB Type-A cable, as well as documentation and Razer stickers. Spend $40 more – and you really should – to also get the convenient desk-mountable charging dock.

Beneath the shell, Razer’s HyperSpeed wireless technology also means incredibly speedy click actuation, while optical mouse switches help register clicks faster for more responsive gaming and everyday use.

There’s no reason to use the Razer Viper Ultimate in wired mode, unless you somehow forgot to charge it – or placed it incorrectly on the charging dock so it wasn’t replenishing battery (been there, done that) – and you’re caught on low power during a gaming session. With a massive 70 hours of battery life from a full charge, you can even be lazy with your recharge habits. Even without the dock, you can still get the full 70 hours from a wired connection. A little bit of charging diligence means enough juice to get you through any gaming session. Besides, if you want to use the Razer Viper Ultimate as a wired gaming mouse, you may as well opt for the cheaper Razer Viper ($154.95RRP).

As far as peripheral companion software goes, Razer offers the best of the bunch. Razer Synapse 3 is the latest version of the Razer software that pairs well with the Razer Viper Ultimate. There are rare times when the Viper Ultimate doesn’t show up in Synapse, but docking then undocking usually fixes that. Otherwise, when it’s working normally, use Synapse to switch profiles, left- or right-handed mouse use, and button functions on the Viper Ultimate (or any other compatible Razer mouse).

You can also tweak sensitivity and polling rate in a dedicated tab, as well as lighting and power options. If you don’t like the (admittedly great) calibration out of the box, use Synapse to configure the Viper Ultimate to your mousepad… or, if you’re a mouse heathen, whatever non-mousepad surface you really shouldn’t be using.

Yes, $289.95RRP is a steep price to ask for a gaming mouse. But the Razer Viper Ultimate has enough bells and whistles to justify the purchase. Whether used for everyday computing or epic gaming sessions, the Viper Ultimate never misses a trick. It’s a shame the on-the-fly DPI sensitivity button is illogically beneath the mouse. It’s also odd that the RGB feels like a missed opportunity because it’s restricted to the Razer logo under your palm. In terms of performance, though, the Viper Ultimate can be your faithful gaming companion for years of gaming.
