It can be difficult to develop a reputation in a category that’s as homogenous as chargers. Fortunately, Ugreen’s booth at this year’s IFA saw it make solid strides towards fleshing out a playful sense of personality that sets it apart from its rivals.

The best example is the new Uno range. The full roster here includes all the usual suspects, from portable chargers to USB-C hubs and a 100W charging cable. That said, the key feature here isn’t so much faster charging via Qi 2 and GaN as it is the clever use of an integrated TFT display.

Rather than do what the likes of Cygnett has done and use this screen to communicate a flat percentage value of how much charge remains, Ugreen’s new line of accessories opt for a more cute approach. While the display panel is monochromatic, plugging in these accessories will see you greeted with all sorts of colorful emoji expressions. It’s almost like having a Tamagotchi built into your charger, except that you’re rewarded for charging your tech rather than wasting your time.

In order of most to least expensive, Ugreen's Uno roster consists of the following:

  • Uno USB-C to USB-C Cable
  • Uno 6-in-1 USB-C hub
  • Uno Power Bank 10,000mAh 30W with built-in USB-C cable
  • Uno Charger
  • Uno 2-in-1 Magnetic Wireless Charger
  • Uno Qi 2 Magnetic Wireless Power Bank

Ugreen isn’t a household name among Australian consumers but the brand has been making steady gains in the portable charging space for a few years now and it’s easy to imagine a world where the debut of its playful take on portable chargers accelerates that trend.

In any case, it’s a fun angle on a category that all too often plays things a little too straight-laced for its own good. It doesn’t hurt that the Uno roster is typically pretty thrifty when it comes to pricing. The company hasn’t yet dished out the details when it comes to how much the Uno range will cost Aussies but it’s probably safe to expect to see all that and more on the company’s Amazon Australia storefront sooner rather than later.
